Longarm Quilting

QUILTING, BASTING, BINDING & SPECIALTY RATES

Quilting and Basting rates are calculated by the square inch. To get a rough estimate, multiply the length of your quilt by the width to get the number of square inches, then multiply that number by the price of the quilting you have chosen. Some techniques that look simple, such as stitching in the ditch, diagonal straight stitches and echoing, are really very difficult to accomplish on the longarm machine. For that reason, they are considered “Custom quilting” and are priced accordingly. There are minimum rates for quilting and basting. Other possible extra
charges are listed below.

EDGE TO EDGE QUILTING - $0.075 to .03 (¾ or a cent to 3 cents) per sq. inch. Minimum charge $25. All edge to edge quilting including meandering and pantograph designs are ¾ or a cent to 3 cents per sq. in. depending upon complexity of design.

CUSTOM QUILTING - $0.04-$0.09 (4-9 cents) per sq. inch. Minimum charge $100.
Separate borders, stippling, drop-in designs, ditching, diagonals, echo quilting.
Price will be determined by the amount of quilting and complexity of the designs.
An additional design fee may be added if custom designs must be created for your specific quilt.

BINDING is calculated by the linear inch around the perimeter of the quilt. Add the length to the width and multiply by two to get the linear inches. Then multiply by the binding price listed below.

MACHINE BINDING - $0.15 (15 cents) per linear inch. Prices are for straight stitch or zig zag edge quilts only. This is when fabric from back or front is rolled to the other side and stitched by machine to the quilt.

HALF HAND BINDING - $0.25 (25 cents) per linear inch. Stitching binding to front or back side by machine and other side by hand. Prices are for straight edge quilts only.

TURNING QUILT - $20 - 90° turn on frame for patterns or borders.

THREAD COLOR CHANGES - $5.00 per thread change.

SPECIALTY RATES - $20 per hour, minimum charge $20. These include seaming
backing, splicing batting, pressing, trimming threads, unbasting, unpinning,
mending, preparing binding and squaring up backing.

PERSONAL CONSULTATIONS - $20 per hour, minimum charge $20.

RUSH CHARGE - 20% of all service charges (quilting and binding), minimum Charge $50. On rare occasions, we are able to accept a rush quilt.

Quilting Information

Before you send in your quilt top to Bounds of Fabric, you will be asked to fill out sign a check form and mail with your quilt. You will be called by the quilter regarding plans for your quilt. You will be given an estimate before the work begins. You will be called as soon as your quilt is complete and ready to mail. Payment in full is required before the quilt is mailed back.

Insurance

Your quilt top is insured for $200 while it is in our keeping. If you value it at a higher amount, please check with your insurance agent and insure it accordingly.

Batting

Most battings work well on the longarm machine. Battings that pull apart easily, shred, or bunch are difficult to use and you may be requested to change your batting

Quilt Top and Backing Preparation

Please follow these instructions carefully to insure successful completion of your quilt.

  1. Press quilt top and backing well and trim threads on the front and back. Dark colored threads will show through on white or light colored fabrics and create “veins” in your quilt.
  2. Backing and batting should be at least 8-10” wider and 8-10” longer than your quilt top. Example: for a 90 x 90” quilt top, the batting and backing should measure at least 98 x 98” or 100 x 100” .
  3. Backing edges should be even and the backing should be squared.
  4. Press backing well and press seams open or to one side. For best results use 1/2” seams. Trim threads. Remove selvages from seamed area only.
  5. Do NOT pin or baste layers together.
  6. We can press, trim threads, unbaste, unpin, seam backing, square up backing and splice batting for you for an extra charge.
  7. We reserve the right to refuse any quilt.
